Dit seizoen deden er twintig teams aan de competitie mee. Bolton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers en Wolverhampton Wanderers waren het seizoen ervoor gedegradeerd naar de Football League Championship. Daartegenover promoveerden Reading, West Ham United en Southampton.
