Porphyra is een geslacht van thalloïde roodwieren dat ruim 53 soorten omvat.[1]
Beschrijving
Porphyra is oudgrieks voor 'paars' en duidt op de rood-paarse tot zwarte kleur van de soorten uit dit geslacht. Het thallus is bladvormig, de dikte van het blad is één of twee cellagen. De grootte varieert tussen enkele millimeters tot wel drie meter. Deze roodwieren hebben andere wieren of harde ondergrond zoals rotsen als substraat. De "bladeren" variëren per soort sterk in vorm.
Verspreiding
Deze roodwieren komen voor in ondiepe zeeën in de getijdenzone. De soorten komen wereldwijd voor, vooral in gebieden met een gematigd klimaat. Het zwaartepunt van de soortendiversiteit ligt in het noorden van de Grote Oceaan. In het Nederlandse soortenregister staan vier soorten: P. dioica, Purperwier (P. purpurea), Smal purperwier (P. linearis) en Navelwier (P. umbilicalis).[2]
Betekenis voor de consumptie
Soorten uit dit geslacht zijn belangrijk als groente, vooral in Azië, maar traditioneel ook in Europa zoals in Wales. In Japan is het onderdeel van nori, in Korea als gim en in Wales wordt het verwerkt in laverbread.
