Florideophyceae is een klasse van uitsluitend meercellige roodwieren (Rhodophyta) waartoe bijna 95% van alle soorten behoren. Er zijn meer dan 7300 soorten, verdeeld over meer dan 35 orden.[1] De meeste soorten komen voor in marien milieu. Er zijn drie orden, Balbianiales, Batrachospermales en Thoreales, die uitsluitend in zoetwater leven.
