Inleiding

Phillips was enkele jaren lid van Genesis. Hij trok zich terug omdat hij zich niet op zijn gemak voelde bij optredens. Na zijn uitstap werd het een aantal jaren stil, maar vanaf 1975 kwam er een reeks albums op gang, soms mede ondersteund door Genesislid Mike Rutherford. Behalve dat Phillips muziek schreef en uitvoerde op die albums begon hij ook aan een lange reeks sfeerbeelden, samengevat als library music, production music. Het is een soort bibliotheek van muziek, die gebruikt kan worden bij documentaires etc. Die muziek heeft in de sfeerduiding (hoe uiteenlopend dan ook) een gezamenlijk kenmerk. Bovendien hoeft de muziek geen duidelijk begin of eind te hebben om in een documentaire opgenomen te worden. De muziek op Wildlife is geschreven om in te passen bij natuurdocumentaires of films en ademt een ambientachtige sfeer uit.

Nasleep

De eerste release kwam van het Japanse Arcàngelo (2007). Een aantal van de albums van Phillips werd in die jaren uitgegeven door Voiceprint. Dat bleek geen goede keus; het verdween in 2010 van de markt. In 2023 kwam er een heruitgave uit bij Esoteric Recordings, gespecialiseerd in retro-uitgaven. Die uitgaven kreeg een aantal bonustracks mee, waaronder een demo van Phillips met Rutherford.
