Chlamydomonadaceae is een familie binnen de orde van de Volvocales. De soorten binnen deze familie zijn vaak eencellig met een celwand en zijn uitgerust met zweepstaartjes (flagellen). Cellen van algen uit deze familie kunnen een, twee of vier zweepstaartjes hebben. De cellen hebben een celkern en meestal een enkele chloroplast die bekervormig is, maar ook discusvormig kan zijn. Enkele soorten missen chlorofyl en zijn saprofyt. De meeste soorten hebben een lichtgevoelige plek, de zogenaamde oogvlek. Deze groenalgen kunnen zich zowel geslachtelijk als ongeslachtelijk voorplanten.
