Anthony Grafton

Anthony Thomas (Tony) Grafton (New Haven, 21 mei 1950) is een Amerikaans historicus en hoogleraar, gespecialiseerd in de renaissance en de vroegmoderne wetenschappen. Hij is voorzitter geweest van de American Historical Association en zit in de redactie van het Journal of the History of Ideas.

Grafton komt uit een intellectueel Joods milieu in New York en deed zijn middelbaar aan de Phillips Academy. Daarna studeerde en promoveerde hij aan de Universiteit van Chicago. Vóór hij in 1974 zijn doctoraat behaalde, volgde hij lessen aan University College London en deed hij onderzoek aan het Warburg Institute bij Arnaldo Momigliano. In 1975 werd hij assistent-professor in het departement Geschiedenis van Princeton University. Na zijn emeritaat in 2025 bleef hij er Henry Putnam University Professor of History.

Sinds 2007 is Grafton adjunct-hoofdredacteur van het Journal of the History of Ideas, en in 2011 was hij voorzitter van de American Historical Association. Al van vroeg in zijn loopbaan hechtte hij belang aan het communiceren naar een breder publiek. Dit uitte zich niet alleen in een resem elegant geschreven boeken, maar ook in stukken voor The New Yorker, The New Republic, The American Scholar, The New York Review of Books en The London Review of Books.
